1. 'Nirbhay', nuclear-capable sub-sonic cruise missile, successfully test-fired from the Integrated Missile Test Range in Chandipur, Odisha.
- It flies low enough to escape the radar and has an impressive strike range of above 700 km.
- Its maiden test-flight, conducted in March 2013, had to be aborted mid-way after technical snag.

2. Centre rolls out a string of labour reforms under the "Pandit Deendayal Upadhyay Shramev Jayate programme" to boost “Make In India” campaign.
- The reforms will make doing business easy by offering industry-friendly labour laws.
- It will make inspection of businesses quick and transparent and simplify rules for employees to smoothly move their social security funds when they change jobs.
3. Dr Arvind Subramanian is appointed as the Chief Economic Adviser of India for a period of 3 years.
- In further bureaucratic shake-up, Rajiv Mehrishi replaced UPA-appointee Arvind Mayaram as the Economic Affairs Secretary.
- Ratan P Watal will be the new Finance Secretary.
- Arvind Mayaram, holder of both above office, has now been shifted to Tourism Ministry.
4. Its 'International Day for the Eradication of Poverty' today (October 17).
- 2014 Theme: Leave no one behind: think, decide and act together against extreme poverty.
- The annual day, in observance since 1993, is celebrated to promote awareness of the need to eradicate poverty and destitution in all countries.
5. World Food Day 2014 celebrated across the globe on October 16.
- This year theme is: "Family Farming: Feeding the world, caring for the earth”, to focus on the significant role it plays in eradicating hunger and poverty.
- Its observed to mark the founding anniversary of the Food and Agriculture Organization of the United Nations in 1945.
6. Veteran Telugu writer and radio artiste, Turaga Janaki Rani dies aged 80.
- Popularly known as ‘Radio Akkayya’, she won the back-to-back national best broadcaster award in 1991 and 1992.
- She has also served as assistant station director of All India Radio.
7. India has the largest burden of global blindness – about 3.5 million with 30,000 new cases being added each year.
- Only about 35,000 corneas are collected in the country each year whereas 150,000 are needed to combat corneal blindness.
